Ancient Healing Wisdom from the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer

Healing Wisdom from the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer

Last week I had the privilege and pleasure of speaking at an amazing women’s event in Copper Mountain, Colorado called “Camp Experience.” (http://www.CampExperience.com) In my keynote address I was thrilled to be able to share what I have learned from a decade of studying and reflecting on the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer. For me, this prayer transcends religion and is much more than a prayer – it provides wise guidelines for living a healthy, whole and balanced life. That is why, as a health scientist and health educator, I love sharing its message.

Many people have asked me for good resources to learn more about the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer. My favorite teachers/authors on the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer are Neil Douglas-Klotz and Rocco Errico. I particularly recommend their books, “Prayers of the Cosmos” and “Setting a Trap for God.”

You will hear many different pronunciations of the Aramaic words much like you will hear many different pronunciations of English. My two favorite sources for learning to speak and sing the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer are Neil Douglas-Klotz’s “Original Prayer” CD set (http://www.SoundsTrue.com) and Susan Lincoln & Craig Toungate’s CD called “Openings.” (http://www.SusanLincoln.com)

Because of the nature of the Aramaic language, the words of the prayer lend themselves to varied interpretations. The interpretations are not substantially different, but they each have a unique feeling. I wanted to share a couple of my favorite translations here as well as one of the interpretations that came to me during my meditations on the prayer.

The Prayer To Our Father

(in the original Aramaic)

Abwûn
“Oh Thou, from whom the breath of life comes,
d’bwaschmâja
who fills all realms of sound, light and vibration.
Nethkâdasch schmach
May Your light be experienced in my utmost holiest.
Têtê malkuthach.
Your Heavenly Domain approaches.
Nehwê tzevjânach aikâna d’bwaschmâja af b’arha.
Let Your will come true – in the universe (all that vibrates)
just as on earth (that is material and dense).
Hawvlân lachma d’sûnkanân jaomâna.
Give us wisdom (understanding, assistance) for our daily need,
Waschboklân chaubên wachtahên aikâna
daf chnân schwoken l’chaijabên.
detach the fetters of faults that bind us, (karma)
like we let go the guilt of others.
Wela tachlân l’nesjuna
Let us not be lost in superficial things (materialism, common temptations),
ela patzân min bischa.
but let us be freed from that what keeps us off from our true purpose.
Metol dilachie malkutha wahaila wateschbuchta l’ahlâm almîn.
From You comes the all-working will, the lively strength to act,
the song that beautifies all and renews itself from age to age.
Amên.
Sealed in trust, faith and truth.
(I confirm with my entire being)

THE ARAMAIC PRAYER OF JESUS

(The Lord’s Prayer) ~ as translated from the Aramaic by Neil Douglas-Klotz

O, Birther of the Cosmos, focus your light within us — make it useful
Create your reign of unity now
Your one desire then acts with ours,
As in all light,
So in all forms,
Grant us what we need each day in bread and insight:
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
As we release the strands we hold of other’s guilt.
Don’t let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
The power and the life to do,
The song that beautifies all,
From age to age it renews.
I affirm this with my whole being.

Deb’s personal interpretation of the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer

Oh Divine Love and Radiant Light,
I turn my awareness to you and feel you pulsing in me and around me.
Everywhere I look I see your beauty.
Open me.
Empty me.
Fill me.
As I breathe in I draw you into me as a lover draws in her Beloved.
As I breathe out I release thoughts, things and ‘busyness’ that edge you out.
Let your love purify me so that I might embody the Goddess that I am.
I am on fire with the passion to co-create a life of purpose, joy and harmony with your desires…. to create heaven on earth now.
Gratefully, I receive the abundance you offer and freely, I share all that I am and all I have as I relax into the safety and security of your constant supply and protection. I have all I need from moment to moment.
I am safe.
With the help of your grace I commit to letting go of hate, shame, blame, resentment, anger, fear, judgment and anything that constricts me from giving and receiving love.
I am free!
May I discern what truly matters and may my actions be in service to all life.
Thank you for the assurance of your boundless love that sustains us, frees us, makes us whole and unifies all that is.
I seal this prayer with all my heart, mind, body and soul.
