I am not an astrologer. I don’t believe the movement of the planets determines my life. But I do believe that the movement of the planets affects the energy in and around me. Just like the movement of the sun can make it too hot to work outside and the movement of the moon affects the tides. So when I’m planning for my PranaShakti dance class, I take into account what’s going on in the heavens.

One of my go-to astrologers for this information is Anne Ortelee. She publishes a weekly ‘weather forecast’ that helps me understand what kind of planetary influences may be affecting us. Then I weave that information into the theme of the class.

Here are just a couple of snippets from her most recent report:

Venus has three unions with Jupiter (July 1, August 4, and October 25) and three squares with Saturn (July 14, August 5, October 10).  As Venus dances back and forth with Jupiter and Saturn, she’s figuring out what the future holds for her (and you). She’s in Leo the first two times ~ encouraging the heart to choose the path it needs to take.  You are starting a new 12 year abundance cycle with Jupiter and a new 8 year heart cycle with Venus.  Think back to the Augusts of 2007, 1999, 1991, 1983, 1975, and 1967 to see your heart path of Venus unfolding in your life!

Mars is in Cancer until August 8.  Every 2 ½ days, we are going to change our work and emotional focus as Mars shifts our activities according to the Moon’s changes.  MARS OUT OF BOUNDS DOES NOT FOLLOW THE RULES!!  Family matters move front and center and are absolutely CRAZY!  Your Cancer house is CRAZY.  Mars whipping through the Cancer house of your chart, with no constraints from the ego, kicks butt and takes no prisoners.  It also gets TONS of stuff done!

When I read that, my immediate response was “BRING IT ON!”

So I created a class with that theme.

If you’d like to dance with us from wherever you are, here’s the playlist I put together.playlist

Bring it on!

Some of My Favorite Things

I enjoy sharing
Things that support my body
To be radiant.

Deb_Blog_foodismedicine

You may wonder why I write so much about food, digestion, detoxification and supplementation.  Well, it’s not something I dwell on, but in 2000 I was diagnosed with a severe case of Epstein Barr Virus. (EBV)  Many people carry EBV without any symptoms, but when the immune system is under duress, that nasty virus takes over and makes you feel awful.  In my case, I was so fatigued that my bones ached.  So fatigued that I would literally fall asleep at the dinner table.

Luckily, I met Dr. Christiane Northrup who introduced me to Sanoviv – the only functional medicine hospital in the world – and the wonderful practitioners at Sanoviv put me on a food and supplement protocol that helped me knock that EBV down. As long as I keep my immune system strong I don’t have any symptoms.

So…I pay a lot of attention to what I eat and drink and am always on the lookout for new foods and recipes to keep things interesting. This summer I met chef Gail Blair who, after decades of preparing healthy cuisine, has developed a gift she calls “food intuition.”  She is very accurate at helping people discover which foods are most compatible to their bodies.

Gail introduced me to several new foods that I’ve now incorporated into my daily plan.  I thought you might like to see some of the new and some of the tried-and-true items in my collection of foods and supplements that support my digestion and immune system:

Some of My Favorite Things

Some of My Favorite Things

From left to right:

USANA MyHealthPak – these are customized AM and PM packs of pharmaceutical grade vitamins and minerals that keep my immune system strong.

Xyla – birch xylitol.  Most xylitol is derived from corn – and almost all corn is genetically modified.  But xylitol can also be made from birch.  And since there are no genetically modified birch trees (yet!),  it is a healthier source for a low carb, low calorie sweetener.

USANA digestive enzymes – has all the enzymes needed to help digest proteins, fats and carbs plus artichoke extract which helps prevent bloating.

USANA Fibergy – pulls toxins and binds them for elimination, removes excess estrogen (so important in perimenopause) and has prebiotics which feed the probiotics and help them flourish

USANA Probiotics – verified 12 billion colony forming bacteria (it doesn’t matter how many a label says are in the product – what matters is how many survive the transit through your digestive system and actually colonize.)

Garden of Life Organic Plant Protein – I’m always looking for tasty protein powders to keep variety in my diet.  I LOVE this one!  15 grams of protein per serving.

Hemp Hearts – awesome to sprinkle on soup (as in my photo above) and salads.  Great source of protein and healthy fats

USANA Hepasil DX – Promotes the liver’s natural detoxification process and helps the liver metabolize fats and cholesterol and move them out.  It also helps the liver produce glutathione – a powerful detoxifying agent.

Dr. McDougall’s Organic Lentil Vegetable soup – there’s nothing but wholesome ingredients in this little box of soup.  I love how convenient it is when I’m in a hurry.  (it’s the base of the soup in the photo above.  I simply added kale as I heated it and then topped it with cilantro and hemp hearts.  YUM!)

Hemp Milk – what I learned from the food intuitive, Gail, is that it’s important to vary your diet – including the type of milk you drink.  I had been drinking almond milk exclusively and had created a slight intolerance to it.  So she has me switching from almond to coconut to hemp milk each week.  I’d never tried hemp milk before and was hesitant – but this milk is super creamy and super delicious!

Chia Seeds – easiest dessert ever:  1 cup coconut/almond/or hemp milk + 4 TBSP chia sees + stevia and almond extract to taste.  Let it sit in your fridge for a couple of hours and voila!   Healthy tapioca pudding.

I hope this encourages you to try something new this summer!

To your vibrant health,

Deb

P.S.  Since my health was so improved with USANA supplements, I became an affiliate for their products 10 years ago.  You can order through my website, but I prefer to customize people’s supplements for them.  So if you’d like my support, please simply reply to this email.

P.P.S.  I am not an affiliate for any of the other products or for Gail’s services, but you can find the other products at Whole Foods or Thrive Market – and you can find Gail’s services here.

Set Your Loved Ones Free

On Children
 Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Last week as I was helping my son pack for a 2 week trip to California with his swim team, I found myself feeling the same kind of ‘not wanting to let him go’ feelings I had on the first day of preschool.  After he left for his big adventure I found myself feeling a sort of dull ache in my heart.  Sort of a homesick kind of feeling.   I have those feelings often.  Not just for my son, but for people I love deeply.   Over the years I’ve learned that I tend to over-nurture and hold on in co-dependent ways – and having worked with hundreds of clients, I realize I’m not alone in those tendencies!  So I’ve developed a practice that helps me and my clients let go of people we love so that they – and we – are free.

When I first began this practice, I was very hesitant.  I thought letting someone go was synonymous with not loving them.   I thought cutting energy cords was synonymous with cutting someone out of my life.  But after using this technique (and tweaking it over the years) I have discovered that letting someone go in this way is a most loving and caring action – for them and for me.  It allows them to connect to the real source of life energy rather than mistakenly believing that I am the source of their life energy.  It allows them to be free to expand into their fullness without any limitations that I might unwittingly be placing on them.  And it allows me to do the same.

You can do this with your children, parents, siblings, pets, friends, spouse, co-workers…anyone you love and wish to set free.

Set your loved ones free.twitter-icon

Here’s how I do it:

  1. I create a small altar with items that represent the person I am setting free and items that represent Divine Love. (I always have a representation of earth, air, fire and water on my altars. In this photo you’ll see crystals (earth), a vase of flowers (water and air – flowers represent air), a candle (fire)  You’ll also see other items that represent my son and Divine Love.)
  2. I light a candle
  3. I offer gratitude for the person.
  4. I close my eyes and ask to be filled with Divine Love.
  5. I take a deep breath.
  6. Then I imagine the person standing in front of me. I imagine all the energetic cords connecting the two of us.  (Relax.  If you are someone who doesn’t easily ‘see’ things in your imagination, just have the thought.)
  7. With my heart, I call forth Archangel Michael and ask him to cut all the cords of energy connecting me to this person.
  8. As the cords of energy are cut, I imagine the person’s energy returning to them and my energy returning to me. I feel my energy fill up and I see their energy fill up and get bigger.
  9. Then I say (out loud or silently): “I love you and I release you to your experience of life.  You are connected to the source of life and you are free to expand.  And I am connected to the source of life, and I am free to expand.”
  10. As I say that I imagine them being held in the palm of God’s hand, surrounded by angels and I imagine myself the same way.
  11. Then I say “thank you, thank you, thank you.” (as the Christian mystic, Meister Eckhart said “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is ‘thank you,’ it will be enough.”)

I hope this practice helps you as much as it has helped me.

In love and freedom,

Deb

Call Your Energy Back

SheWhoIs

Art by SheWhoIs

Last year I took an energy healing training from a powerful teacher named Ataana in which I was reminded of the importance of calling back my energy. Why? Because as Ataana pointed out to me – if I’m not in control of my energy, someone else is. And they are using MY energy for THEIR purposes.

The sobering question is: Who is doing what with your energy? twitter-icon

If you want ALL your energy to use in ways that serve you and everyone around you, call your energy back! It’s a deceptively simple practice. But I can assure you that it can make all the difference in how you think, feel and act.

Wanna know how to do it?

Simply stand with your arms spread out wide and as you bring your hands together into fists at your heart say these words:

I call all my energy back to me.

Then put your left hand up and right hand down and as you bring them together into fists at your heart say:

I am whole and complete.

This practice goes perfectly with the practice I have taught you about that I call “plugging energy leaks.”  As you move into all the wonderful activities of summer, it’s a good time to call your energy back and plug your energy leaks. (Actually, it’s always a good time to do that!)

Blessings,
Deb

P.S. If you happen to be traveling to Austin this summer, I’d love for you to drop into one of my dance classes . First class is free…even if you’re just passing through town. It’s a great way to call your energy back.

Dancing frees your soul…unless it doesn't

Dancing frees my soul.  It’s my number one way to…
pray
celebrate
grieve
process
create
express
free my soul.

But it wasn’t always like that.

After being told by a ballet teacher in first grade that I was “much too large to dance” I never even tried to dance.  So when I tried my first Nia class in 1990 I was way too self-conscious to simply let go and dance freely.   In fact, the idea of ‘free dance’ made me freeze in my tracks!  Even after I took the teacher training to become a Nia instructor, it took several years for me to feel free enough to express my authentic self through dance.

That’s why I love sharing dance as a healing tool –especially with people who think they cannot dance.

Last week during a magical retreat in Tulum, Mexico a wonderful man in my class said he really didn’t think he should come because he didn’t have any rhythm.  I told him that simply couldn’t be true.  Everyone has rhythm.  Your heart has rhythm.  So does your breath and the movement of cerebrospinal fluid.  All have their own perfect rhythms.

Maybe you don’t have the ability to imitate someone else’s rhythm.  But you definitely have rhythm.twitter-icon

So he stayed.

And he danced.  And prayed.  And celebrated.  And expressed.  And freed his soul.

Afterward he told me that he had seen a movie 25 years ago about rock singer Jim Morrison called “The Doors.”  In the movie there was a scene where Jim and his friends participated in a shamanic peyote ceremony and began dancing with wild abandon.  He said he had always wanted to dance like that  – and now he finally had.  Except we didn’t need any drugs to dance so freely.  What a gift!

DebBlog_06172015

I want that gift for you.

Since most of you don’t live near me in Austin, Texas, here is the playlist I used in class last week.

Dancing frees your soul...unless it doesn't Playlist
