Some of My Favorite Things

I enjoy sharing
Things that support my body
To be radiant.

You may wonder why I write so much about food, digestion, detoxification and supplementation.  Well, it’s not something I dwell on, but in 2000 I was diagnosed with a severe case of Epstein Barr Virus. (EBV)  Many people carry EBV without any symptoms, but when the immune system is under duress, that nasty virus takes over and makes you feel awful.  In my case, I was so fatigued that my bones ached.  So fatigued that I would literally fall asleep at the dinner table.

Luckily, I met Dr. Christiane Northrup who introduced me to Sanoviv – the only functional medicine hospital in the world – and the wonderful practitioners at Sanoviv put me on a food and supplement protocol that helped me knock that EBV down. As long as I keep my immune system strong I don’t have any symptoms.

So…I pay a lot of attention to what I eat and drink and am always on the lookout for new foods and recipes to keep things interesting. This summer I met chef Gail Blair who, after decades of preparing healthy cuisine, has developed a gift she calls “food intuition.”  She is very accurate at helping people discover which foods are most compatible to their bodies.

Gail introduced me to several new foods that I’ve now incorporated into my daily plan.  I thought you might like to see some of the new and some of the tried-and-true items in my collection of foods and supplements that support my digestion and immune system:

Some of My Favorite Things

From left to right:

USANA MyHealthPak – these are customized AM and PM packs of pharmaceutical grade vitamins and minerals that keep my immune system strong.

Xyla – birch xylitol.  Most xylitol is derived from corn – and almost all corn is genetically modified.  But xylitol can also be made from birch.  And since there are no genetically modified birch trees (yet!),  it is a healthier source for a low carb, low calorie sweetener.

USANA digestive enzymes – has all the enzymes needed to help digest proteins, fats and carbs plus artichoke extract which helps prevent bloating.

USANA Fibergy – pulls toxins and binds them for elimination, removes excess estrogen (so important in perimenopause) and has prebiotics which feed the probiotics and help them flourish

USANA Probiotics – verified 12 billion colony forming bacteria (it doesn’t matter how many a label says are in the product – what matters is how many survive the transit through your digestive system and actually colonize.)

Garden of Life Organic Plant Protein – I’m always looking for tasty protein powders to keep variety in my diet.  I LOVE this one!  15 grams of protein per serving.

Hemp Hearts – awesome to sprinkle on soup (as in my photo above) and salads.  Great source of protein and healthy fats

USANA Hepasil DX – Promotes the liver’s natural detoxification process and helps the liver metabolize fats and cholesterol and move them out.  It also helps the liver produce glutathione – a powerful detoxifying agent.

Dr. McDougall’s Organic Lentil Vegetable soup – there’s nothing but wholesome ingredients in this little box of soup.  I love how convenient it is when I’m in a hurry.  (it’s the base of the soup in the photo above.  I simply added kale as I heated it and then topped it with cilantro and hemp hearts.  YUM!)

Hemp Milk – what I learned from the food intuitive, Gail, is that it’s important to vary your diet – including the type of milk you drink.  I had been drinking almond milk exclusively and had created a slight intolerance to it.  So she has me switching from almond to coconut to hemp milk each week.  I’d never tried hemp milk before and was hesitant – but this milk is super creamy and super delicious!

Chia Seeds – easiest dessert ever:  1 cup coconut/almond/or hemp milk + 4 TBSP chia sees + stevia and almond extract to taste.  Let it sit in your fridge for a couple of hours and voila!   Healthy tapioca pudding.

I hope this encourages you to try something new this summer!

To your vibrant health,

P.S.  Since my health was so improved with USANA supplements, I became an affiliate for their products 10 years ago.  You can order through my website, but I prefer to customize people’s supplements for them.  So if you’d like my support, please simply reply to this email.

P.P.S.  I am not an affiliate for any of the other products or for Gail’s services, but you can find the other products at Whole Foods or Thrive Market – and you can find Gail’s services here.

Let these remarkable women inspire you

Certain women dance
Merrily into your life
And you pray ‘THANK YOU!’

Last weekend I had the huge pleasure of interviewing women whom I love and respect as friends, mentors and family. Whoever said you can’t mix business with pleasure, certainly never met us!

And whoever warned against doing business with family never met THIS family!

Three generations of Northrup women have been a powerful influence in every area of my life – including, but not limited to our USANA business.  I treasure them like crazy, and my heart is so full after spending time with them last weekend that I want to share the love with you.

The Matriarch

Any time I have a chance to listen to Edna Northrup’s life stories, I grab it.  Her motto in life is “NO LIMITS” – and she embodies that motto!  Just watch this 3 minute video and you’ll be blessed with her amazing energy and zest for life. It’s the next best thing to being with her in person.

The Doctor

Women’s health pioneer and best-selling author, Dr. Christiane Northrup needs no introduction. She continues to challenge the status quo and expand the possibilities for women to be fully empowered. She sees her job as a doctor to help women learn everything that can go RIGHT with their bodies….not someone who looks for what’s wrong.

This is one of my favorite interviews with Dr. Northrup. It will change your perception of aging and open up a whole new level of possibility for what it means to be ageless!

You may not be familiar with Dr. Northrup’s sister, Penny. Penny was a member of the United States Ski Team from 1968-1972 competing on the world cup tour. She’s the mother of 3 grown guys and a very successful USANA business owner. My nickname for Penny is “Switzerland.” She has the ability to rise above any conflict, take the 30,000 foot view and then offer the most grounded, practical, spiritual solution. I don’t have a video of Penny, so I’ll share one of the best pieces of advice she gave me: I was stressing about a conversation I’d had with a potential business associate…beating myself up because I felt I hadn’t been well prepared for the conversation, and Penny said:

“You can’t say the right thing to the wrong person, or the wrong thing to the right person.”

Phew! Instant relief! I’ve clung to those words on many occasions and they have served me well. I hope they serve you, too.

The Next Generation

Kate Northrup is, and always has been, a creative entrepreneur. She started her business with USANA Health Sciences at the age of 18 and has been taking the world by storm ever since! The biggest thing I’ve learned from Kate is to BE YOURSELF. When she started her online journal in 2010, it was just that: an online journal. She wasn’t intentionally trying to create a persona in order to monetize her journal, she simply felt compelled to share her life. And that authentic, bold action turned into a blog that is the basis of a high 6 figure business.

Aging in Reverse!

I am blessed to have been friends with Dr. Christiane Northrup for 16 years. She inspires me in so many ways! One of those ways is how she seems to grow younger every single year. She has literally aged in reverse!

How is this possible? The answer is not just one thing. It’s a kaleidoscope of factors. And she is finally making them accessible to all of us in her newest book, Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality and Well-Being.

This book isn’t about all that can go wrong as you get older or how to prepare for the cultural myth that we fall apart as we age. Goddesses Never Age is about adopting a new, ageless attitude that will help you flourish physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. You’ll find out how to nourish your body and look fabulous year after year. You’ll learn to upgrade the relationships you have with others, your body, and the Earth. You’ll also find ideas that will challenge you to let go of the negative misconception about women’s health and aging—myths which many women have internalized and cause aging.

Trust me. You want this book! And the great news is that if you order now, you will receive these bonus gifts from Dr. Northrup:

  • Baby Steps to a New You – Audio Download In this one-hour audio, Dr. Northrup tells you why “less is more” and teaches you to create goals that are attainable and sustainable, so you can realize your most precious dreams.
  • Embodied Wisdom: Decoding the Mystery of Vibrant Feminine Health Online Course  On Demand Download In Dr. Northrup’s 3-part online course, Dr. Northrup will guide you through the seven major energy centers of the body, and the processes and organs they govern.  Next, she’ll show you exactly how to access this vital life force in your day-to-day life to achieve vibrant health in mind, body and spirit.

Pre-Order your copy before February 24th to get both of these special bonuses!

If you feel called to guide people AND make money….

Many of you have asked me how to offer workshops in your communities and around the world like I do. I never quite know what to say, because it’s taken me decades to develop my workshop and retreat materials. But now I know exactly what to tell you!

My friend Danielle LaPorte has transformed her book The Desire Map into a teachable curriculum that can be delivered as live or virtual workshops, destination retreats, or even combined with other events and courses. It’s called The Desire Map Licensing Program.

Guiding people towards their desires
It’s a business-in-a-box for anyone with the entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for uplifting lives. And I can attest to the fact that it saves you decades of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I love this program so much that I asked my event production guru, Laura Forsyth (founder of One Yoga Collective), to reveal the secrets for making ALL our workshops and retreats profitable.

After you purchase The Desire Map Licensing, Laura and I will send you our exclusive webinar “The 2 Biggest Money Mistakes Workshop Leaders Make… and How To Be A Master At Profitability” plus 5 interactive spreadsheets to give you the power over your profitability.

Part 2 of Being Enough: The Power of ‘ish’

Part 2 of Being Enough: The Power of ‘ish’This week I’ve been juggling the beta-testing launch of an online program (that you will hear about soon) and being the mom of a teenager and preparing for my annual Costa Rica retreat.

I couldn’t seem to do any one of those things as well as I would have liked.

There were technical difficulties when I delivered my first webinar.

My teenager seemed sullen and nothing I did could bring him out of his funk.

And all my ideas of looking amazing in a bikini while surfing in Costa Rica shattered when I tried on my bathing suits.

So I did what every wise goddess does when she finds herself stuck in self-dissatisfaction: I sought the counsel of a wise friend.

My wise friend listened to my tales of woe and then said, “Sit back. Relax. I’m going to read you a story.”

And she proceeded to read me the story of ‘ish’ by Peter Reynolds…

Now I feel happy-ish with the webinar I created. Hopeful-ish that my son is simply going through a teenage phase. Mother-ish and teacher-ish. Peaceful-ish.

And I’m excited-ish about surfing. Being surfer-ish.

What a relief to discover ‘ish’!

So, what will you transform using the power of ‘ish’?
