Fun as a Spiritual Practice

SEPTEMBER 30TH, 2010

I absolutely love the community of women I dance with every Monday and Wednesday in our Daring Diva Dance Class!  A few weeks ago, one of the lovely divas in class gave me a mix of ‘Hot Disco’ tunes and I had so much fun creating a class with that music.    We dressed in our funkiest 70’s/80’s attire and laughed the whole way through everything from “Disco Inferno” to “YMCA!”  And I had a big “A-HA” moment that fun is a spiritual practice just a much as quiet meditation is.

Most people who know me know that I love to read spiritual texts, meditate, pray and reflect.  And I have always known that dancing, walking, being in nature, doing acts of service, making love…even making dinner can all be spiritual practices.  But I never quite got it that pure, unabashed, funky FUN can be a spiritual practice, too – until yesterday.  There was a moment yesterday when we were shaking our groove thing that I felt so much joy and so much love coming from all of us that it felt like a prayer for all of humanity.

Wanna give it a try?  I’d love to hear how you experience “Fun as a Spiritual Practice!”  Here’s a playlist to get you started.  Just download a few of these tunes and dance like there’s nobody watching.  Feel the joy and laughter spread throughout every cell and open your heart.  Then send your prayer of joy to all the people who could really benefit from it right now.

Click “Play” on this boombox to hear the sound track!

Nia Music – 50th Birthday Music List

OCTOBER 8TH, 2008

This is the class I taught for the celebration of my 50th Birthday!! The second song is the Aramaic version of the Lord’s Prayer. I first learned the Aramaic translation from my mentor, Sister Maurus Allen. I thought you might like to see one of the translations:

THE ARAMAIC PRAYER OF JESUS

(The Lord’s Prayer) ~ as translated from the Aramaic by Saadi Neil Douglas-Klotz of the Sufi Order of the West ~

O, Birther of the Cosmos, focus your light within us — make it useful
Create your reign of unity now
Your one desire then acts with ours,
As in all light,
So in all forms,
Grant us what we need each day in bread and insight:
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
As we release the strands we hold of other’s guilt.
Don’t let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
The power and the life to do,
The song that beautifies all,
From age to age it renews.
I affirm this with my whole being.
